Building an Understanding of Cosmic Distances Through Scale Models

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Join UT Dallas space scientist and teacher educator, Dr. Mary Urquhart, on TEKS-relevant interactive journey as we explore cosmic distances in the solar system and beyond using inexpensive student-made scale models, free curriculum resources, online resources from NASA, and more! In our lightening paced exploration, tastes of hands-on activities (made available free to all participants) will guide us as we develop our sense of scale in the Earth-Moon system, the solar system, nearby stars, and our vast Milky Way galaxy and Local Group. TEKS relevant material includes travel times to celestial objects in the solar system and beyond, light years as a measure of cosmic distances, and how telescopes are peering back in time to the distant edges of the visible universe.
